The difference between armor is smaller now. More to your point, mages won't be wearing bone or metal armor and so archery will continue to be a big factor.

There already is a timer. These kinds of changes can also be very inconvenient to farming, so they need to be careful about side affects.

Thing is that we saw what happens when toomany people stop helping new players or when there aren't enough people helping during the several years of death spiral in MO1. It is sort of a paradox. The game needs new players to survive, but too many new players are detrimental to its success...

There's no reason to only wear light armor unless you use magic. An Alvarin can wear heavy armor with out being slowed down and stam regeneration isn't affected until 14k weight, so aim for good quality plate armor and your character can do just fine.
