Cuprum beats Pig Iron every time?

I have tried crafting multiple 2h swords and spears with both materials, in both core & head, and Cuprum wins every time. Is it just because Cuprum is better for slash/pierce and pig iron better for blunt?

No, it is because the main purpose of pig iron is to be made into grain steel. It isn't really good for anything on it's own.
