disclaimer English isn't my first language, so sorry in advance.

Let me start by saying i know the game still in beta and i know there is more important things to fix, but that been said the cooking system needs a big change and relook by the devs. At the moment cooking is a system and a main "job" and foucs of some players. It have a full list of titles that come with it and a list of enough primary profession skills that you need to invest in on top of that you have 7 different tools and many ingredients even in the beta stage of the game.

While all of that is amazing and great , the reality of the game is that all of this is pointless and frankly useless at the moment.

The tools make zero sense when the best use of flour is with turnspit and more so just pure Rye/Spelt will make you the highest stamina reserves food and adding any extra ingredient on top of the pure flour will make it worst.

Same goes to the health reserves cooking the most easy animal to hunt the simple pig in a cooking pot will give you the best health reserves food and adding anything else on top of it will make it twice worst, turning all the rest of the meats pointless other then for selling them to an npc for some pocket change.

Been a "cook" at this stage of the game is basicly waste of skill points and hunting for cooking ingredients can be summarized with " kill a pig" , " hold R on Rye" use cooking pot and turnspit.

While i never played MO1 and i did hear there was an extra system to cooking , at this stage and how the road map looks i don't think they will add it or foucs on adding it before the game comes out of beta and goes to launch
As a full game.

Meaning this system will be dead on launch and as empty and basic as it is now, while dressed as a "complex" system that new players will put hours to learn thinking they can be cooks and chefs only to find out how empty , basic and makes no sense the cooking system really is.

As someone that that been standing next to a cooking spot for hours and days mixing and testing and trying new things crazy combos just to make something not useless and ending up making something that almost good enough but takes 3 times the time to gather and test while i can "cook" something better in 5 min without any testing or experience with a single ingredient its just sad.

Sorry for the long rant but i loved the idea of been a cook and it makes me sad how useless it is and how little work was putted into it.

I'm not asking to add new systems on top of it, just rework what we have at the moment and make cooking a useful job and interesting. Or just remove it from the primary skills list.

back in mo1 at least we had sophistication to strive for.

by making the best nourishing foods in the game very simple and easy to get they've shot themselves in the foot. Fried pig and roasted flour should not be the panacea that they are but rather the 'basic' nourishment foods that will refill your reserves but also take all of your hunger gained from losing those reserves to do so.

MO2 have the most advanced crafting system and i love it but cooking is an exception.
As good as the crafting system and professions are, so crappy and uninteresting is the cooking in MO2, which i find really sad.

I don´t understand the logic. Why you mill ray and rost it to get a better stam food, as if you would mix the flower with Water to get doe and beak a bread with the baking Pot ? This is against every logic. Adding carrots and other ingrediants should muliply the stam reserves. There should be food with Buffs for a specific period of time, if you eat a certain ammount of Units till the Buff reach it´s maximum potential !

Here some Ideas. You can carry 10 % more weight.
There should be horse food, that let your pet carry 20 % more weight for the next 30 min.
Some Food could give your 10 % faster stam regen for the next 20 minutes if you eat a cerain ammount of Units.
For every 10 Units you regen 1 % of your health if you are eating or regen 1 % of you mana while you are eating.
Food could give you a buff against very hot or cold weather.
Food could give you 10 more speed for the next 5 Minutes. This should come with a tradeoff, becuase you not have unlimited hunger. if you eat it, you miss the hunger to eat Stamina food and might grey out during a large battle.
Some Food could give you a Skillbuff. +5 Skill in Armor training for 30 min, if you eat 100 units, so you can wear a bit heavier armor, if it is balanced that you can eat as much units again after the buff runs out. Then it would be a tradeoff, becuase you not have unlimited hunger and grey out without stamina and Fatfood.
Some Food could give a concentration buff, so you have a bit less chance to get interrupted as a mage.
Some food could give PVE Buffs.

SV could do so many things with cooking. Cooking is the only profession in the game that needs a real big rework and at least some logical changes before release, as the one with the bread i mentioned before.

I hope SV will hire a UI specialist at some point to rework some icons and stuff like that.
Maybe the combine skill could be used for cooking buff food.

Combine 100 units Baked Potatos with Dile with 100 units of roasted Pigmeat to get one icon that fill out deveral slots and take away 200-500 hunger at once or so. Maybe this would be easier as a buff that increases the more units you eat. it also would look better. i would not mind if some special items would take several slots in the inventory. For excample very huge items as the Risar King axe. I also like a free inventory as in ultima more as an inventory with slots.
However, I do not know whether this would have an effect on the performance. If so, then the current system should be left as it is.

The UI and the cooking profession could need some love, but i think there are mortant mechanics that have to be added first.

cooking pot - pig
spit - rye

Sad how true it is and on top of that both those tools are secondary under cooking and basic cooking is secondary as well , so everyone can do it anyway, rendering cooking and cooks even more pointless and useless.

There is alot that can be done to add and make cooking worth it , but it will take time that i don't think SV have or want to put into something like cooking , but i would be happy if they take what they have at the moment and just rework it a little and make it not as useless job as it is now , make the skills work make the number calculation work , because right now it's a system that don't have anything in it just some skills that don't really do much beside take your skill points.

Yeah i heard about sophistication but honestly i don't think they have time to add it now or add something new and better. It's crazy to think that in cooking adding more flavor and things will make things worst and adding less will make the numbers go higher and better

Baking pot!

I dunno, I got some mats, someone threw malus and palm fruit on broker for 10g/5000, so I bought a bunch. Looking forward to that, the thing about beta is you gotta process all your stuff, which is respec, then cook which is respec, and it becomes more tedious than making bows.

I'm pretty sure I could do whatever w/ the cooking system. They did change it a bit, but it's samey enough. I'm sure it's possible to make battle snacks. I despise food buffs tho! Soph was such a good system, useless, hard to figure out, something people who played for awhile wanted for titles... perfect fluff system (esp since you could weave soph into regular food so you might eat a lesser fat food to get your soph up.) I just remember people like "No one has figured out soph (even tho there were 2 people w/ big soph on list)", and then some one else would come behind them and say JUST EAT BLACK CREFT or whatever it was called.

18510Lillin <---- this was more significant back when, now she's almost pushed off. haha. Dudes like WE HELD GK FOR A YEAR DURING PEAK POP. It's like ya but I got Lillin on the soph list.

But yes, long story short... the cooking system now is a joke. It was balanced before by soph because some people could be like HEH WHO CARES ABOUT SOPH, 1 INGRED, and it's like... BARBARIAN! And we'd all chuckle.

I am a cook from MO who did other stuff but mostly did cooking and made friends thru that. I found the MO world intriguing enough to pop in and out of it, cooking all de while. Once they made it so you could see your soph update in real time zomgzzz. We used to have to wait for reset and roll a new char, so the goal was 100 (it was always was) and you'd have them eat the units and wait for reset, waiting for that 1 soph... didn't get over it til aloe release, and nah I wasn't cooking w/ salvia or anything. But yea, despite all that, and that being something I wanted to come back and mess with more... I would never spec cook in MO2, as I previously said. I am going to say it again but add in a line break.

With the cooking system the way it is, there is no reason to spec a cook. And yea... maybe there was no reason to spec it in mo1, either, or so they said, however! Everyone wanted a cook in their guild after awhile. The meta shifts! But the 'just making stam/fat' food and fill your reserves part was pretty wack. I remember making OP soph food by mixing both spider queen meats. It was sophy but it would make your char puke heheehh. And do some dmg. Fun times.

Sounds lame, but having more meters to move IS FUN. I spent a solid month figuring out soph stuff ( I had to gather too) and even wrote stuff down in notebooks. Further refined forever after that. I am not seeing a system like that in MO2, which is a huge sad. I was, in fact, going to make a poll for people who played MO1 but weren't like WILD ON ALPHA/BETA for Mo2 like... people who got the e-mail and were like ah MO2 is about to come out, sure I'll try... I wonder how many of them expected it to be this bare. I'm not mad at it... I'm here, yknow, but yikes. I was thinking it'd be kinda boring if they didn't somehow change the way the soph system worked, but then it's like oh nvm it's gone.
At this stage i don't even ask for soph system , just for them to make what ever in game already work , and things reworked like the Ingredients and the misleading skills tool tips that makes you belive they do anything for cooking when they are not, cooking tools that are useless because there is 0 logic behind them SV never heard of " the right tool for the right job" i guess , cooking feels at this moment like they doing us a favor even putting it in the game because it's not pvp important so why bother , because here have a pig and rye for those hardcore pvp players. But hey you can name your sword after you craft it guess thats higher on the list then making a core basic system work right smh

Here's my own idea for it.

TL;DR of my post:
  • Get rid of weight gain/weight loss from being tied to reserves.
  • Make weight gain/weight loss tied to specific ingredients mixed into food (Butter, Salt, etc.) and specific food types (Deep Fried Food, Beer, Decoctions).
  • This allows more effects to be placed on food since it won't all be messing with your weight, like food that diminishes reserve losses, food that keeps you full for longer/drinks that make you hungry quicker, food that makes you gain/lose stats quicker (eat lots of meat, gain STR quicker for a few hours), food that gives you more protection from heat/cold when that system is out, and so-on.
  • Though I didn't mention it in my post, the more cooking you have obviously the better/longer lasting the effects would be. And some of them (maybe all of them aside from reserve replenishment) may not be possible until you have Advanced Cooking.
Gives dedicated cooks a distinct role.

Agreed. It feels it is missing alchemy type multipliers at the very least or a sophistication implementation that would be actually meaningful but I am not seeing that coming anytime soon.

If the system stays like this I would vote to just remove cooking and have the grocer vendor sell proper food until they have a working system.

Those are all good and interesting ideas and only with those it will make cooking one step more interesting, also adding something like the alchemy that have things like multipliers and what not on ingredients can add more flavor to the mix where every multiplier will effect diffrent ingredient. But SV will never see this or read this , sadly i think in their eyes cooking is good and complet

As much as i love cooking and all i agree , it should be done right and SV should respect the player that pick cooking or remove it and not keep this basic and pointless system as it is now

Cooking mechanic is not nearly finished, its added just so everyone can be able to cook some basic food. It will get more complex in future.
I get the " it will be good with time" this argument is kinda empty and miss the point of the main problem with the cooking system as it is now and how pointless and empty it is while still presenting itself as a full and complex system and falsely make players to belive there is "meat" to the system. A new player will put hours into mastering a system on launch that looks real but fake under the hood. Leveling skills for it buying books for the tools , the material lore , going on hours of grinds for those ingredients, spending hours upon hours mixing things. And at the end learning the sad realitly that all of that was a waste of time because the system is basic and empty. But hey sometime in the future if an when SV will remember that will add another system on top of the already broken and empty system that is cooking and will call it a day. The problem isn't only with the missing parts of the system today, the problem is that this system is flowed from its core.

The problem with the food system is. It's not fun, that's the problem with it. It becomes a chore not a game. Now if they were to create food that gave an element of "fun" to it. "Makes me strong bro." At least its towards progression. People care more about progression of their characters than they do maintaining their weight 100%.

On another note. Henrik said he wanted this food system to prevent mindless zerging. Fun fact, if you're getting zerged you get hit way more than anybody else. Cause you have 20 people to hit your 3 people. Anywho, I'm just passing by. Food for thought, getting punished for playing on a smaller scale.

Amazing how SV makes one good change for cooking and in the same patch makes a bad one. Pig are not the best hp food but hey here are crabs , just cook crab meat without anything and it will even be more op the the pig was before. SV just don't care about cooking and cooks :(

Attach gaining and losing weight to a threshold. If you are between the thresholds you dont gain or lose. If you are below you lose weight over time. If you are above you gain weight over time.

Dying loses weight, hurts reserves. You can rest up to max reserves. Food buff the max reserves past their max and then slowly decreases.

Honestly if they just gave us resting back like the human has now, the reserve system would be way less trash. Shamanism is so QoL that people dont want to not play human. Imagine if the entire game was that QoL too. Just makes game design sense.

I wouldn't call the pig meat change (or the springbok meat buff) a cooking improvement, its just balance. The cooking experience is still terrible, these changes were a hunting change not a cooking change - those need to be mechanical changes not changing around stats on the ingredients.
