The number of players with subscription is much higher than the number of visible players in the steam charts: First, nobody is playing 24/7, means the number of playing account is at least a factor of 10 higher than the numbers in the steam charts. And second, the steam charts are displaying the public steam accounts only. Steam accounts set to private are not displayed. In our guild about 70% of all players are using a private account.
You're right. I'm just an idiot. Everyone's profile is private and MO2 has 10,000 people subbed on Epic. GOD IM STUPID1765513004018.png

This game has another interesting revenue model, in that you can buy the game and play it for free forever, but you have the option of buying premium status which increases your XP gain and daily Grace on login. The higher tier premium options include Plot Tokens which allow you to own and maintain one plot of land per token for one month. The game also allows you to own one Grace Plot which is paid entirely using Grace.
I play that game. It's literally buy to play. You also get a plot per month you can easily earn in game.

Here's another Wurm Online:
Small sub (otherwise capped). If your sub runs out crafting and such is brought down to irrelevant levels however you retain the ability to sail ships, ride horses, ride carts etc.
Then all the money in game, even when you get it from game actions is bought by players. Allows some people with little time to buy money (for deeds trade, etc). Allows others to earn it through grind.
Sounds very P2W right? Well it works. A lot of people wouldn't have been playing if this wasn't an option. Also earning money has some weight to it.

MO2? I'd like the option to be able to login and keep my stuff when I'm not actively playing, or just look around. RIght now I have a sub for playing once per mon th. But then again it's an honest monetization. The old pay sub play game from my childhood (except runescape which allowed you to play free to a point).

This approach of a free game with an optional premium sub that gives you bonuses (50% more drops, skillcap raised to full and etc...) is the best modern way to monetize MMOs.

But these geniuses at SV make you pay a 40€ box price first AND an additional sub on top. No wonder nobody plays anymore.

What @Xunila is trying to say is that the numbers on Steam charts don't tell the full story. It only shows those with their Steam profiles set to public. Those set to private and Epic accounts are not shown.

I think everyone here acknowledges that the real actual numbers are much lower than what they were at launch, but using Steam charts to paint a picture of the player population is not entirely accurate.

There is another source for the number of players, even this doesn't show the number of currently active players but about all players: The global ranking in steam. In the global mastery level ranking I'm on a rank about 2800 with 70 mastery levels. Means, there are many players (or have been in the past) with high gaming activity.

I think MO1 died the way it did because Henrik announced MO2. I remember seeing a steep fall in player numbers which never came back in the days after the announcement. Before that, it was hovering around 300-400, occasionally reaching 500.

This is also common in a lot of games when major features/changes are announced in upcoming patches. People tend to take a big break then come back for the new content (obviously not saying this makes up for all the numbers)

Thats not really accurate, you can check the steam charts for MO1. Since 2016 we were hovering around 100-200 avg players and in december 2019, the year MO2 was announced, we were actually around 50-100.

The game was pretty much dead at that point but ofc the announcement of MO2 was the final nail in the coffin

Was shared a clip of DredOG melting down like "There could be a 200 v 200 fight happening somewhere!" It's like yea I don't think so. I don't understand why people need to act like the game isn't having big troubles right now.

I am playing it and somewhat enjoying it. It's still super dead. Build a house next to teph. That kind of dead haha.

It's getting that everyone knows everyone feeling that MO1 had, but MO1 was so much of a smaller world.

Is the game epic trash atm? Not exactly. There are big issues, but most of it is just rule changes that caused a lot of people to quit and GRIND. The game itself is OK. It needs work, too, don't get me wrong, but that's not the reason nobody is playing.

People say hardcore pvp is a niche genre, but most of the people playing aren't hardcore pvping. The hardcore pvp is probably contained to a few very small 'hot spots.'

Just need to make some changes. Light some fires.

It's cool, guys!

haha, man he received enlightenment, carved BROKEN into his body, and then went on a journey, totally forgoing his foraging NPC duties! Was more than just a short term visual glitch.

I was making a joke about how irrelevant an issue like this is to the success of the game, EVERY game has visual broken elements in patches, it happens. This is a placeholder asset the game defaults to when the appropriate asset has an issue.

Weird comments like this just derail any focus on the issues that actually affect the player experience and retention in the game.
