Hi folks, I am new to MO in general, my question is, should I delve into MO1 first to get some experience or just wait for MO2 to get properly out of pre-release?

A few months ago maybe yes, could help to learn the map etc. At this point where you can test the resources and what not already probably not.

Could still be useful to learn how to level a character though

Yes, the game mechanics will be the same. You can try combat, crafting, taming in MO1 and it will be almost identical in MO2.
