13) You may not abuse, harass or threaten another player

Yesterday, i was subjected to abuse, harassment, AND threatened by the same person, over the course of several hours in the nave chat.

They made up lies about me, they insulted me, they threatened to attack me in real life, saying such things as "you'd better watch your back in real life" etc... They even tried to coax me onto a videocall to disprove a lie they were spreading about me; which of course was a ploy to find out who i am in real life, no doubt to follow up on the threats they were making. This person, for whatever reason, was VERY angry at me for something i had done to them in game; even going so far as to pay a new subscription just to talk past a prior chat ban.

So how did i respond? I reported them, and I waited. I waited for them to be banned from the nave chat, as they were endlessly harassing me with a group of friends.

10 minutes go by. Nothing.

I report them again for another blatant term break.

10 minutes go by. Nothing.

So by now, i'm getting pretty annoyed right. There is someone actively trying to besmirch me in every way possible in the nave chat; theatening me; trying to blackmail me into a video call under the threat of further harassment after they JUST threatened to attack me in real life.. and i'm just supposed to take this for over 20 minutes??

I report them again.

Finally... A GM enters the nave chat.

What did I get?

I get told to "Stop weaponizing the report system"(a rhetoric clearly born out of people trying to counter report me; and somehow, the GMs actually picked this up. Why? Because the people harassing me outnumbered me of course, and as i announced i'd report them, they clearly counter reported to lessen the blow and to frame me as the villain in the scenario).

The GM even said that the verbal abuse and lies that were levered at me were not related to anything real life; as they don't actually know my real identity.

Why is this a completely absurd response?

The issue isn’t whether the player knows my real identity; it’s that they made explicit real-life threats and statements about my real life that were untrue. That moves this beyond in-game behavior into real-world harassment.

Threatening harm or making lies up about someone’s real life is not standard in-game interaction and is typically covered under harassment and safety policies. Accuracy of the information isn’t the point; the intent and nature of the statements are.

They were trying to cause me harm through those statements. That is abuse. That is harassment.

This is objectively a break of terms. Not just a subtle break either, but an extremely egregious break of terms on multiple levels. AGAIN, the terms state:

"13) You may not abuse, harass or threaten another player"

It wasn't just a one off either; but even if it was, that is still unacceptable, and should be treated seriously.

This persisted for over an hour; and to have a GM then enter the nave chat, and make these abusers feel like they had done no wrong after HOURS of harassment.. Well, you can imagine what they continued to do. You basically just gave them free reign to continue the abuse. The same people do this over days too, this was just the worst day so far, where they started threatening my real life.

They literally laugh at my reports. They laugh and feel like nothing is going to happen to them, that they're free to say whatever they want; and they do. I've seen racism, sexism, every ism you can think of in that chat. Nothing seems to happen; i see the same people continue to type. And listen, i'm not some crazy sjw leftist type who is super over the top about moderation, quite the opposite; i actually hate super strict moderation; but this is literally the wild west.. There is no law or order in the nave chat; or a kind of weird law and order, where people are punished sparsely and at random.

So... I follow your terms. I report SEVERAL blatant term breaks, and you actually tell me to stop reporting, when this person threatened me, lied about me, insulted me, blackmailed me with the threat of further abuse... Tried to coax me into giving away my real life identity after threatening me.

But What About Other People who Experience Harassment and Abuse in Nave chat?

That was just my experience; let's look at OTHER people's experiences that i've seen in the nave chat; which I would argue are worse, because these people actually have their real life identity unveiled on the game; as they stream it. I won't name the names of the streamers, but i've seen:

-People being accused of killing their own pet that had recently died in real life.
-People being accused of being a p*do.
-People talking about/lying about family members and close friends.
-People lying about/talking about the relationship status between people in their real life.

They say some seriously disgusting things in that chat; and i think you've allowed too much leeway with this term "trashtalk".

YES... Trashtalk is good for the game, IF IT IS KEPT IN THE GAME.

The line MUST be drawn when people start trying to make statements about a person's real life, true or not, with the intent to cause harm, that MUST be taken seriously.

I don't care if someone is saying something as seemingly mild as "Billybob can't blow a balloon properly because he has weird lips!"; if it is said with the intent to cause that person harm, either directly or indirectly, it MUST be considered harassment and abuse. That is your line: Is it related to real life? Is it intended to cause harm either directly or indirectly? If yes to both of those: it is against your terms, and must be punished.

Trashtalk ingame would be: "Billybob, you're so bad at this game; you need all your friends to help you!" or "Billybob uses such an easy build, he is pathetic!".

That is said in the context of the game, there is no intent to make a statement about a person's real life; that is safe. It is fine; but always be wary of context, because even if it looks like it is about the game, it may not be. Also, it is important to note the sheer persistence; how persistent are they insults? Is it non-stop day after day for hours? Again, the persistence should be a factor.

Point being:

PROTECT YOUR PLAYERS PLEASE. UPHOLD YOUR TERMS.

When even someone like me thinks you need to start taking moderation more seriously, you have severely overcorrected since the helpchat days.

Just mute people if you can't handle it as mortalenjoyer said. Threats are bad if true but I don't believe boy who cried wolf tbh.

You can mute people remotely. Solve your own problems.
I'm sorry, no.

Muting doesn't work because this is not something that impacts me directly, it impacts me through besmirching.

My reputation is being destroyed without me knowing if i mute someone.

Like, do you think in real life if a media outlet said "Susan is a p*do"; that person should just not listen to it. NO, it is going to have ramifications of their experience in life. Just like if someone lies about you in a game, it is going to have impact on your ingame experience. That kind of behavior can only be dealt with by an active moderator.

Depending on the lie, it could also impact your life from in the game too. It also means the luxury of exposing your identity becomes highly risky too (although i don't think anyone should ever do that online in a videogame).

Dude, get a grip. You're reputation? What, you're in game avatar? Come on man. If you know whatever they are saying isn't true just block them and ignore them. Were you home schooled or something? This is grade school level problem solving.

No you moron, how is it my ingame avatar when they're lying about the person playing it?

They didn't lie about my ingame avatar stupid.

So if everyone on the game said you were a p*do; everywhere you went, people said you were a p*do, you couldn't get into a guild because everyone thinks you're a p*do.. Everyone attacks you on sight because they think you're a p*do. Somehow this rumor gets to your real life, you sent an email to someone, a discord to the wrong person, someone who knows you in the game shares who you are, whatever.. Now what? Now you being a p*do is being leaked outside of the game. None of it is true, but everyone now thinks it; and it WILL make your ingame or inlife experience more difficult.

You're just not thinking ahead, or thinking at all really. You're looking at the surface layer, but not all potentialities. There is a reason this stuff is considered criminal.

There's not much to uphold in terms of your reputation, I assure you there's nothing to worry about

You're taking the term "reputation" in the wrong context. It just means public opinion; not something genuinely positive or negative.

Sally,
I saw this post and wanted to share my thoughts because seeing others mistreated is just not good - games should be fun and not inducing such stress.

I've witnessed a fair deal of toxic behavior on Nave Chat - things can certainly get heated. I've seen everything from very helpful (fortunately most of the time) to outright racist junk. For my part, I'm sorry that you are having others treat you that way, from what you mentioned above. Yes, you can mute and block, and sometimes these things are for the best - but I also hear you when you say that the GMs were not as helpful as it seems they should have been.
Mortal is a great game, for sure, but it does have its moments where people can say some pretty awful things. Personally, I say very little in chat - I'm more of a solo casual (3+ years though), but it does get under my skin when it goes from "trash talk" to cruelty. Sometimes I'll say something if it gets particularly cutthroat.
I do have faith that overall, the GMs and Developers are professional folks that strive to do well, so maybe they'll get back to you in a more direct, helpful way moving forward, or if it continues.

Okay, and what does that have to do with the current discussion?

It happens; people have seen it. The end. You saying you've never experienced it doesn't change that it objectively happens, and is against terms.
