Name Filter

I would like to suggest some sort of name filter for the game. I am not suggesting that it should be some sort of hardcore RP thing, but it would be nice if there was some type of minimum standard. Examples of names for characters that I have seen (that I wished I had not) in the beta are: "CumGod", "Swampvagina", "Eaturass", and "Hitler". I am sure there are many, many more like these. Other than being incredibly dumb and sophomoric, they are also really at odds with immersion. I think it would benefit MO2 if this was addressed somehow. Thanks.

They should remove caps in your name too. Like DEATHSLAYERmanRE. Also really dumb looking. But the good news is they're hopefully removing help chat so we won't have to listen to idiots complaining and insulting each other all day

In the first game SV would somewhat police names, if they were too egregious or flat out stupid names, they'd message you in-game and sort a name change out. You were able to report names too. Can probably expect something like this to happen when the game hits steam early access.

Look, I know people have names they are attached to, and some of those names don't really fit in a medieval fantasy setting. I am okay with that. Some people have what they consider to be funny names, or names they use in other games including MO1, etc. I get all this. I just think that there should be some sort of minimum standard for gross and/or offensive names.

People who use these think they are clever, and while I would like to believe they are just kids messing around, we all know better. Regardless of who does it, it should be addressed and unless they want to devote an employee to policing it constantly, there should perhaps be a more robust name filter attached to the game. I certainly don't want to use my time reporting these names, and I really shouldn't have to.

Usually such filters don't work (decently). Either they are overly restrictive, or they are easily evaded by changing some characters or leaving some character out, but everyone still knows what it's supposed to mean.

I agree that its offputting to see all the vulgar and juvenile names all over.
if the community remains small enough all they need to do is have a character naming policy and then rely on players to report offensive names. Having said that GMs are going to be hella busy at launch with all the other bugs in this game.

So, a strongly worded, enforced policy then? Perhaps one exists currently, and I am not aware of it. Maybe something in the naming section of character creation that reminds players that if they choose an "inappropriate" name, it will be changed and further actions may be taken upon repeated abuse.

I laughed... Also i remember making a butcher in mo1 named "Rimjob Blowjobsson" and got renamed to changethename for the rest of his career. However my tamer, Vagenis got to keep the name so i think theres a fine line.

Do you think the player who named himself "Hitler" would care if there is a warning asking to choose a fitting name?

Half-right. Giving one capital letter at the beginning should be easy enough (to eliminate all-lowercase and ALL CAPS). That's not complaicated.

Why do you waster your time caring what other people name them selves? Whole bunch of busy bodies here.

This is a discussion as old as MMORPGs themselves. There have been naming rules since the beginning, and even strict RPG naming conventions in some situations. Other games have been pretty lax. However, I will simply state that there has been no MMO that I know of (and I've played a lot of them since 1998) that allowed names like "Hitler" or "Swampvagina". If I have to explain to you why this is, well--just know that the grand history of MMORGP gaming disagrees with you.

Stop caring about what other people choose to do and your life will be a lot better. Pro tip for you.
Also stop trying to make other people care, we have better things to do.

I must say that sounds like a bitter and unproductive response. It isn't my "caring about what other people choose" that created the naming conventions in UO, EQ, SB, WoW, SWG, etc. They existed for reasons outside my control, and no amount of desperation from the guy who really, really wanted the name "Hitler" changed that then, and it won't now. So, to those who thought that maybe, just maybe this time they could fulfil their lifelong gaming dream and take the name of geocidal dictator for the "luls", I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed (yet again).

What or why does there need to be some productivity to any of this. I play a game and dont let other randoms bother me but you feel like it should bother me. Maybe you could find this productivity if your took care of yourself instead of worrying what others are doing.

I am of the mind that have a minimum standard for naming is productive. In fact, even though we do not see it supported very well in beta, without this minimum standard it will hurt the game at launch. While SV has to be aware of this, I hope to encourage them to pick up the pace a bit on this issue, because right now their game has many offensively named characters in it.

If you look at my earlier posts here, you'll see that I am not advocating for a harsh RP name system. I am advocating for a bare minimum standard where names like the ones I listed are not in use.

There are countries that people play this game from that could, potentially, crack down on it if it allowed certain names. That's not wrong, or right, just a potential that Star Vault probably can't afford to entirely overlook. So: they won't allow a few things.
And, when they don't allow certain things, they probably also won't tolerate discussion of the decisions involved.

I say this because this is not a new discussion, and the Mortal community has had it before.
Also stop trying to make other people care, we have better things to do.
Maybe you do care.
You could always stop trying to make people support the freedom to abandon even minimum standards.

SV will have its standards and some of them are already in place for the forums.
Think the ones in-game will be much different? I wouldn't bet on it.

Section II: Naming

II(a). Names and Avatars will not be offensive or vulgar in any language. We will not accept definitions from satire definition websites.
II(b). Names will not impersonate any SV staff, other players, real world figures, or be connected to your real life self; this is for your own protection.
II(c). Avatars will not impersonate any SV staff, other players, or real world figures.
II(d). Names and Avatars will not allude to or contain pornographic/inappropriate content.
