Initial impressions

I just played this game for the very first time. Here are my initial impressions.

I created a human character and entered the game with nothing but a loin cloth. Somebody ran up to me and sent me a guild invite immediately as soon as I entered the building with the armor crafting stations. I literally had been in the game maybe 60 seconds. Nevertheless I accepted the invite.

Eventually I found a barrel near a crafting station and got a message I could loot it. I assume this is just for the beta version. I did loot the barrel thinking a guard would attack me. But that did not happen. Maybe there were no guards. I had trouble figuring out how to buy stuff from a merchant. Then had trouble figuring out how to craft something. But I did manage to craft an entire set of armor and a woodchopping ax after maybe 30 minutes. Specifying the quantity of an item I wanted to buy seemed tricky. The 'bar' where I was to type the quantity did not seem very sensitive. I had to click this bar several times before it would activate.

While chopping wood my character got stuck and I had to press a special button to get unstuck.

The environment was almost silent the entire time. Even after I adjusted the sound volume sliders. Maybe I need to adjust the volume on my computer as well. I have not figured out how to switch to the Help chat channel. So, I barely communicated to anyone. Not even the guy who sent me the guild invite. Once I crafted my armor my hands remained up and cocked. Like I was about to punch somebody all the time. I never figured out how to lower my hands.

I think I have figured out how to craft spells but have not made any yet. I bought a bow but have not figured out how to shoot an arrow. Maybe that was simply because I did not encounter anything to shoot yet.

There were four other players nearby who spent most of their time fighting each other. Perhaps doing this improved their stats. My stats improved just from chopping wood.

The town was huge. In fact I spent maybe 20 minutes lost in town just trying to get back to the armor crafting tables after I chopped some wood.

I have not yet figured out how to run or jump.

The graphics seemed pretty nice. Once or twice somebody seemed to be standing in the air. Game performance seemed fine on my 2.5 year old 'high-end' laptop.

After playing for 2 hours or more I have a general idea of the very basics. Perhaps the next time I play I will leave the town.

First of all, welcome, and thank you for taking the time to write about your experience here.

The loot in the barrels are free-for-all, for now, while the game remains in closed beta. Once the game enters persistence, this may change.

The X key is default for readying your fists or weapons. Press again to put them away.

Bow crafting may require a lot of trial and error before crafting a bow that you are happy with. However, the basic rule is that you will need wood and a secondary hard material. Once you have crafted a bow, you will need to equip arrows. Left click and hold to draw, release mouse button to fire the arrow. Right click to cancel.

Arrows have a physics flight path that simulates gravity, if you are aiming to hit something farther away you will need to aim higher accordingly. You can also opt to aim using your reticle or the arrow tip by going to the game settings (Esc key), I personally use arrow tip.

Hold down shift to sprint, space bar to jump.

There is no mini-map to track your location or visualise your whereabouts in the game world. This is intentional by design.

If you leave town, you have two options to manage your relative safety while travelling. Stick to the dirt path to minimise your likelihood of getting lost, but risk a higher chance of encountering player bandits. Or stay off the dirt path and risk getting lost very quickly if you're not familiar with the terrain.

Joining a guild would be a good idea to get more information from experienced players. With persistent state many guilds will start recruiting in Haven and the cities.

Welcome Icterus!

Hopefully some of these basics are covered more for new players when the starter island is added in the next patch.

A part of the game is trying to figure out how things work beyond the basics though. And it appears that you are the type of person to try and work things out.

So again welcome to MO.

Thank gawd im not the only idiot who thought that. Shit, I planned a whole scheme. I waited till it was dark, snatched as much gold as I knew I could carry.
and ran the hell out of GK. I felt pretty silly when I realized the truth...I even ran up to GK from MK and didnt know that I just could have looted at MK..
I was so embarrassed

I have played again today. I know how to run and jump now and how to raise and lower my hands, thanks to finegamingconnoisseur
I also figured out how to access the Help chat channel: /help

So, I crafted a shield and decided I would leave town and try attacking some bandits or maybe some creatures. But after walking 30 minutes from town I still had not seen any bandits or animals. Someone in chat said they would be added later. Or I was told to go to a dungeon. I had seen a YouTube video of someone fighting bandits and hunting creatures. I had no idea I would not be able to do the same. And I had no idea where the dungeon was or how to get there.

So, I decided to turn around and walk back to town. But then it got dark. My entire computer screen turned completely black. Okay, 99% of it turned completely black. Someone in chat told me to use a torch. I said I would if he brought me one. Night seemed to last a long time. I could not move. So, I just stood there while my dexterity stat increased.

When morning arrived I resumed walking back to town. Once there priority No. 1 was to learn how to make torches. But I could not find a crafting station that offered that option. Someone in chat told me I could find torches in boxes. I guess he meant I could loot them. So far I have not been able to find a box with a torch. Torches are starting to seem like valuable items.

I also learned in chat that there essentially are no quests. This has got me wondering whether the game is all about pvp and crafting to supply people for pvp. That seems okay - just different.

I discovered how to collect water. But so far I have not found anything to eat. Actually yesterday while lost in town I found a large outdoor market. Maybe I was supposed to buy food there. I have not yet been able to relocate that market today. But I will.

I do not like hand-holding easy MMO's. So, this game appeals to me. Although maybe it is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Some people in chat have said a tutorial starting location will be added soon. I suspect that will help a lot.

You may want to check out the area around Fabernum and Kranesh. I believe you can find bandits, springboks and brush pigs in the surrounding areas. That may be the area the person in the video was at.

As others have said, welcome. =)

I hope you're not too frustrated, as others have mentioned, without a tutorial island, unfortunately learning a lot of the systems right now requires trial and error or having a friend/someone in game show you around.

To others, is in-game voice still turned off? I found that best way to find someone random to help out, otherwise yeah /help is a good idea, or just /saying in a populated area, hopefully you'll find someone nice to guide you a bit. =)

If you're not super frustrated, I just wanted to say I love the style of your "travel logs". It sounds like an explorer or a scientist landing on a remote island trying to survive.

Day 99: Today, a monkey stole my hammer. That was my last hammer so I do not know how I will be able to finish the hut I was building to survive. I tried using a nearby large rock, but eventually ended up hitting my hand instead. I sat for approximately an hour, staring at the sand contemplating the meaninglessness of it. Later, I ate a live squid.

People duuu. people . you here the way some people talked about GK being THE place . i thought it was area specific loot.

Edit: when i got back to MK, i still didnt know about the loot there. I thought I was taking area specific loot, When I saw MKs loot, I figured they would about me around with their guard antics.

Further Edit: I still hope that is the case. that the rep wont raise if you do stupid stuff, like, take shit from barrels that arent yurs.

Without giving away too much:

A Youtuber by the name of Wolfszeit has documented the various towns, cities, dungeons and other places of interest on his channel. Playlist can be found here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnFCxXbT8LOOgAMpnkrNdSxRTuaNtWush

The night is a double-edged sword. For those who must venture out only under the cover of darkness for whatever reason, or if they have night sight, this is their ideal time of day to play.

For those who loathe the near-pitch darkness, they will either hunker down in town and socialise, do crafting, or just wait it out until near dawn.

You can buy torches and other essential equipment at utility vendors located in all towns and cities. They cost 1 silver each.

Meduli is a port town, so naturally bandits love to camp the only eastern road leading in and out of there. You will find them milling about on the rocky terrain waiting for unsuspecting travellers to go near them, at which point they will attack en masse if there are enough of them.

Cooking is the craft of the imaginative and creative, you can cook up just about anything that can be cooked in a myriad of ways. Even water can be cooked, though you may want to add different ingredients to make it more nutritious and appetising.

Some foods need to be thoroughly cooked to prevent food poisoning. Your character can and will throw up in a rather unsightly fashion if poisonous food is ingested in sufficient quantities.

You will of course need a cooking appliance of your choice and a heat source. Some simple ingredients can be purchased at the grocery vendor.

In a nutshell, Mortal Online 2 (and its predecessor) is a simulation of unpredictable human behaviour and ingenuity when given the tools and freedom to experiment in any way they choose.

Well, I played some more, before and after the patch. Before the patch I died for the first time (while afk) and figured out that you have to go to a priest to get resurrected. And you lose everything you were carrying: everything in your inventory and everything you were wearing - except your loin cloth. Before you get resurrected you cannot interact with anyone or anything. You can elect to be teleported to your home priest or to the nearest priest. It struck me that might be a way to explore the map as long as you were not interested in anything else.

I also played after the patch. The game is very different now. You can no longer walk over to a barrel and grab so much money that you cannot even move. And the number of skills you know is drastically reduced. You now are born essentially with a loin cloth, a torch and a sword. You must earn everything else.

But you are born in Haven, a 'tutorial' starter town where you are save from being attacked by other players (supposedly - more on that later). You can make money in Haven. But doing so is very tedious. In fact after 2 - 3 hours of playing in Haven I was still wearing nothing but a loin cloth. I had elected to spend what little money I had made on skills instead of armor.

Eventually I figured out how to make a fairly decent amount of money just outside the walls of Haven - enough that I could start to equip my character with armor. Without being too specific, this involved harvesting resources and recognizing that a 'catalyst' is optional. I acquired enough resources that way that I thought I was going to be able to obtain 1 - 3 nice pieces of armor from the Haven NPC armor merchant.

So, I started back to the town gate. Suddenly I was being attacked. I turned around and there was another player next to me in what seemed to be full armor. I was a little irritated because I thought I was still safe from attack by other players. I was not sure he had attacked me and I walked up to him to see whether he might say something to take a swing.

Then I was attacked again from behind, obviously not by the person I was facing. I did not know what was going on. I just ran to the town gate thinking I would be safe with the town guards. Once by the gate I turned around again to see what was going on. There were three players near me all decked out in armor and I was being attacked by a 'young wolf'. I had never seen a wolf in the game.

I waited a little to see whether the other three players were being attacked by the wolf also and to see whether they might be trying to kill it. But as far as I could tell I was the only one being attacked by the wolf. Perhaps this was because I was just wearing a loin cloth and the other players were wearing armor. I guess there were no town guards nearby.

Instead of just running into town I stuck around longer to try to figure out what was going on. That was when I realized the young wolf was slowly wearing me down and I was going to die right there inside Haven. Once dead I dropped everything I had. But before teleporting to a priest I remained to see whether the young wolf attacked the other three players. But the wolf seemed to have lost all aggro once I was dead. I am not certain. By the time I got back to the site where I had been killed my stuff was gone. And I was stuck still wearing nothing but a loin cloth.

I kind of suspect one of the three players near the wolf maybe had him as a pet. Or had charmed him? Or had simply led him to me so the wolf's attention would switch to me when it got near. Perhaps a 'pet' wolf might be a way to kill new players immediately outside of Haven (or even inside Haven as I was) even if PVP technically is not allowed.

I guess this is a lesson to me. Haven might be a safe zone for new players as far as PVP goes, but perhaps only in name.

It sounds like players may have been taking advantage of this bug. Which is a shame if that was the case.

But griefers are going to grief If they can find a way. Lets hope it is address quickly.

Players should expect the possibility of these types of things in the main world though. But if they are promoting haven as being safe from other players then players should not have the ability to do such things. And even possibly be punished for doing so. If that is what was happening that is.

SV has roughly 24 hours to deploy a hotfix or two before the incoming thousands of newcomers descend upon Haven and the mainland. Let's hope they get this sorted, and quickly.
