When you think about it they already have the mechanics in the game. They would only need to copy butchery, but make it a salvage window and tool. Bam! new feature that returns materials based on skill level and item being salvaged and I am sure material type would play a factor...

I can't read what the heads of SV are thinking, but based on what I know from my time with MO1 they seem to want to promote item degradation and destruction more than anything else, in order to fuel the in-game war industry that in turn fuels the trade broker markets, which in turn incentivises players to get out there and play the risk versus reward game that this entire game is based on.

But I see the logic of your suggestion, EVE Online has been on-board with it since day one and has been rather successful for the past 20+ years.
