By game NPCs I mean things like Springboks that are roaming mobs that run when approached or attacked. Obviously, the intent with these NPCs is to simulate hunting. But right now the current system feels very off in terms of hunting. Obviously part of this is AI glitches where they stop running / get hung up on terrain etc. but without those glitches it actually would be very hard to confirm a kill sometimes. Here are my suggestions to make it feel a bit more realistic.
I'm basing these suggestions on the assumption that we have head, torso, and limb hitboxes.
1. Headshots should give a huge damage multiplier that insta-kills on small/medium game.
2. Torso shots should give a lower damage multiplier + a bleed effect that generally kill small/medium game with one hit but after the animal flees.
3. Limb shots should lower move speed.
4. All shots that do damage should apply some damage to the max stam bar (So creatures can't run as far when wounded as if you spook them by missing a shot.)
What's the point? Well first off in real hunting, good shots kill. Sometimes outright, sometimes the animal runs a bit then dies. And that's what's simulated with the bleed effect on torso hits. It should not always take two shots to kill a springbok. Maybe you need a better bow to one-shot an alpha but a good torso or headshot should generally be lethal. The fact I know my first shot isn't going to kill before I even make it is immersion breaking if you're trying to make an immersive hunting experience. You shouldn't need a chase the game to get off more shots meta on a medium creature like a springbok when your first arrow flies true. When campadons/mammoths make it in, hell yeah, those hunts should be epic if they run. But one-shot kills on a deer-like creature should be common if you're a good aim.
