Shields make left and right attacks with melee weapons extremely awkward, hitting near the middle of the swing arc does "sour spot" damage which is lower than near the end of the swing arc which does the "sweet spot" damage that normally is mid swing for melee swings. Overheads are not affected by this and work the same as without a shield.
It leads into trying to hit people with the very end of the swing animation which is weird to pull off and gimps an already niche melee style which no one uses at all.
