From the most recent patch 1.0.0.9:
-Increased some fishes strength
This change resulted in Silk Ray snapping many lines and bending the rod in a comically extreme way. The only time I caught them was if they were very small or if I got lucky where before I reeled any fish in without issue. Please revert this change, at least for the Silk Ray. Thanks.
