Hello, watching videos and reading about magic in this game, I was wondering if it's a viable build. A dread knight in vanguard: saga of heroes was a 2h weapon with corruption/debuff magic. I'm curious what the veterans of MO would say to this build. Thanks for your replies!

Death knight in MO > dread knight in vanguard.

DK is a summonable pet under the Necromancy magic school ( that isnt in game yet).
I just think the name is too similar to catch on.

Also what you describe sounds a lot like the standard hybrid melee build.
Vheela speed build, with light armour, min strength for a light 2h sword, that can cast corrupt, dispel and small heals. Used to have high psy to resist/reduce incoming magic damage.

the last change in how psy effects magic damage reduction/mana pretty much killed hybrids, but if things change in that department you’ll see plenty of them coming back.

I mean you could play a Thusar skinny mage but it wouldn't be very good lol. I guess if you're going for a death knight vibe a hybrid human mage would work the best as someone mentioned. Hybrids are fine but the safest bet but as someone mentioned they're pretty subject to balancing changes that can make or break them

My two cents after looking up dread knight in vanguard: saga of heroes and skimming through the video for about 10 seconds is mention you can't cast magic with a weapon out. So there will be brief down time for each time you want to switch from attacking to casting. Also we'll have to see what they do with the rest of the magic schools because corrupt is the only debuff type of spell currently in the game.

yes, hybrids aren’t easy to play. They have less Hp than warriors, they have less armour, they deal less melee damage. However they make up for it with heals, small magic damage, and buff/debuf. Most importantly they can corrupt which is the only way in MO to almost guarantee a kill if used properly. There is no other spell that prevents people from healing in this game. And when you have to contend with bandages, heals, pipes, potions it can be very hard to finish a competent enemy without corrupt. The higher the pvp skill level the more clutch corrupt becomes.

hybrids are not front line fighters, they usually go after mages and help with finishing off people. They hit and run. They bait and bunt, but most importantly they stay alive because they are so versatile. And once the enemy gets low they swoop in for the corrupt and the kill. They are not masters of anything in particular, buck jackals for all to fear.

This is a hybrid, though.

The concept he is wanting is the paladin build. Full armour, full strength. With little mana pool and no mana regen.

Which I would argue could be even harder to play than a hybrid.

you dont have enough skill points to have a full warrior build with heavy armour training and also fit magic schools. Even as a human with the extra skill points.

Even if you sacrificed some crucial warrior skills for magic, you’d only be able to cast maybe 2 spells and thats it. Mana regen with heavy armour is non existent, and mana pool with low int/psy is too small.

youd be gimped as a warrior, shitty as a hybrid, and useless as a mage.

Never said it is easy, never said it is a good build. But it does exist and some people run it, it isn't that scarce.

Some people also want to play a concept they like, rather than just play the meta.

The only magic skill that has to be even remotely close to max is mental offense and you can easily make do with around 60 mental training. Rest is just fluff, you can cast anything that you'd want to actually cast with a character like that at around 30-40 ecumenical. people min max way too much.
