Sort of late to this conversation, but there is some key factors between Taming/Domination.
One if not the biggest being that taming is an active profression, you can give people pet 'tickets' which allows you some income and allows others without proper taming access to said pet. Super important for something like owning a horse. This along with them having more utility in the future with beastmastery will make the investment worth it.
Domination is really selfish, pure mages in their own situation typically are weaker both physically and in their loadouts. This along with the need to position properly when casting makes them not too difficult to chase down when they're alone. I think the point of the low amount of points necessary is for the sake of putting points into this such a survival and defense.
It's tough to for me to say from experiences because I haven't seen a Domination mage as of yet.
