From my testing, I think that when wielding a dagger with a shield there is no possibility of getting a handle hit with a left swing. Not sure if intended or bug.

I think it's daggers in general. (Didn't test it since this patch).

"Daggers no longer have handle Tracing. "

do you get the handle hit with a right swing tho?

as Rhias mentioned now daggers have no handle trace, so if you get a handle hit should be a bug

Ye, I could handle hit with right swing and overhead. I was testing on the material supplier NPC, I dunno if that has any effect.

try to report it in game using bug report, i'm wondering if it's intended to have no [handle] just with thrusting attack or at all :D

patch notes says "Daggers no longer have handle Tracing." so i assume it means no handle at all...

the Jungle. Meditating on things to come.
I´ve never had handle hits with daggers and I´ve use them a lot in duels. It´s the point of dagger really. They are very hard to use still and can get outdamaged very easily, even if you have a shield. I think daggers are in a good place actually.

Thread resurrection, but how do people feel about the viability of daggers right now and/or how to use them strategically in a fight? I'm a big Assassin/Thief fan, so the idea of a dagger build with light/leather armor is appealing to me. Since there is no dual wield (my dream), it seems like using a dagger with a shield would be ideal?

I had some success with a dagger and small shield. Even though it's a close in weapon with no handle hits, had some success using the shield bash to create distance, then go in for a dash/stab to the head at close range. And since there's no handle damage, you can get in close and go for slashes/stabs if you can get around someone, but if you're exchanging wild slashes in close you're also liable to catch a big hit from a bigger weapon and end up losing out.

Anything I'm missing? Also, backstabbing (with only daggers?) was a thing in MO1 right? How did that work and anyone know if they've talked about bringing that to MO2?

Daggers work good against long weapons if you can stick close, you can completely outdamage them if you go hyper aggressive and meanwhile they handle hit you.

Damage is fine, not sure weakspots are where they should be but that'll help.

Backstabbing basically was an attack immediately executed upon pressing the bound key, hit could only land if you hit them in the back. Had different effect through out its existence. At some times it ignored armor, other times it was just a damage bonus over a normal swing. At some point I remember it only working from behind and hitting heads. But not sure how long that lasted.

Even a dagger with no shield is a fairly viable weapon right now. And we have screenshots on the site's home page confirming dual-wielding is going to be a thing.

I can only imagine that the inclusion of dual-wielding will make daggers even stronger than they are now.

It all depends how dual wielding will work. If its anything like MO1 it'll be a big disappointment :p

Why would you want to use dagger with no shield? Is there a benefit to leaving the left-hand empty? It seems like the addition of a shield would only help.

I'm slightly more than 50% but not 100% sure that if you have a weapon and shield that attack rate is based on weapon weight while parry speed is based on shield speed, while with just a weapon it operates off both. Also, I think shields are a primary skill (Again not 100% on that) and while that doesn't matter now it will of course matter at whatever point skill caps get implemented which would be release day at the very latest. Finally it's a full loot game so the less equipment your build requires the less you lose when you die. Daggers in general are a good weapon for a high-risk playstyle like thieves because they are low mat-cost, low-dura, meaning they cost less if you die a fair bit where their cost of replacement averages a lot closer to other weapons if you expect to die infrequently. And if you're planning to dual wield I imagine single dagger is closer to that playstyle while dagger+shield will make you reliant on a piece of equipment you are eventually going to lose.

So when everything is free and there are no skillpoint limitations you're going to be running it purely for faster parry speed and giving up the chance of equipment hits on your shield which is a pretty big loss.

In-short. Not a lot of reason to run it way that way now unless you think that's how you might run it come game release and you want to get practiced fighting with a handicap currently so you'll be a god when the reasons you accepted that handicap are implemented.

Shields didn't require points to use in MO1.
You might use a shield because they soak up massive damage even when you don't block.

Right, I figured I kind of “had” to use a shield when using a one handed weapon for that reason. But it’d be cool if there was a distinct benefit for not as well, to open up pure 1h weapon builds. I tested briefly in game and I could be convinced there’s a slight speed advantage to not using a shield.

Also the stamina drains of shields while blocking is higher compared to blocking with a light weight weapon...
