You're supposed to use more ranged when you have a numbers advantage in a game with friendly fire...

It wasn't honor or realism that made a bow necessary. It was a poor mechanic.

Funny because archery was a good tactic for minimizing friendly hits in the original Darkfall for teamfights. And MMOs don't get any more fast paced and skillful than that. Maybe it's just a generally good rule to go by and has nothing to do with your parry hatred?
