They are simultaneously tanks, healers and damage dealers.
They are dps because they have ranged magic that bypasses armor.
They are healers because they can cast heals that scale with the same stat that dictates damage. So already, they fulfil two roles with one set of stats and skill points.
Finally, They are tanks because they can :
A) cast heals uninterrupted under melee damage.
B) They can wear tower shields AND/OR have mobility,
C) They can spin.
Mages, as they are, can do it all.
Either they are mobility tanking, that is, running away with high speed and healing. It is still tanking if you hit and run, it is called "dodge tanking".
Or, they are actually tanking, with a tower shield and uninterrupted heal spamming.
Then, add to this a skill like death hand, that simultaneously deals significant damage and heals the user..
So, you're attacking a mage, they have a tower shield.. They spin and spam cast healing, or worse, they just cast death hand on you whilst you try to attack them. You can't deal enough damage to them to kill them, because of the tower shield. You're dying because of death hand, and most insulting of all, they're healing over the tiny damage you're doing through the tower shield anyway.
Death hand and tower shields allow them to do it all simultaneously. Tank, heal and dps all in one.
Honestly, the game has an overarching issue with combat healing in general too, but it is most egregious when on a mage.
Mages should either be dps, or they should be healers. They should NEVER be tanks. You must deal with this, because it is really unfair on foot fighters, and i say this as a mage. I purposely play without a towershield because i actually have a sense of fairness, and i still perform extremely well. So to say mages would be helpless without them is laughable.
You SHOULD die if a foot fighter gets close and hits you. That is how it needs to work for it to be fair. You either kill them before they get close, or they get close and you die. Right now? Melee die at range, and die up close. It needs to change.
Oh, and to the people who say "death hand is hard to hit!".. No, it really isn't. You get used to it, it is easy, like everything, it takes some minor practice. Also, let's be real, a lot of mages are using undetectable pixel aimbots to cheat nowadays; or do you seriously think people are landing 100% of death hands consistently? Be realistic.
