Starter Sword

Please remove the starter sword from characters once they leave Haven. Having a soul bound item that you can endlessly grief with is one of the most toxic mechanics in the game.

They should teach you how to destroy items with it in the tutorial so you are stuck with the god awful wooden sword they get you to craft.

Should just be that you only lose soulbound items if you die as a criminal. Maybe spell books excluded

Keep in mind that with the standing system you cant really just spawn and dunk with your worn shorty. You will be locked out of town very quickly. And unless it got heavily buffed at some point, its a terrible weapon anyway. But I'm very opposed to them removing it. Its a nubs savior. When they die and lose it all for the 10th time, they can go kill a walker with their worn shortsword. Kill a few more and they can hopefully buy some flake sword on the broker or something. Cuz keep in mind, not everyone's a crafter.

Being able to pick your bound weapon would be a very nice addition.

It's a non issue. It's only so prevalent right now due to
1 - Test environment, why not fuck around?
2 - Very close to persistence release, why not fuck around?

A naked person swinging one of the weakest weapon in the game, going criminal, is an easy free kill. Once persistence hits, griefing won't be too viable, since character time investment and the reliability on blue towns with the new standing system, really limits griefing players. So much so, the most notorious murderous thieving guild in MO history(GUTS) has hung up their flakes spear for MO2.

This does not apply to all of the red priest in the game JC, CC, Kranesh, and GK... so no. Plus, I hit for 50 with my Thursar on naked players with the bound sword. Big yikes.

I agree more for the fact that a bound weapon allows players to do chip damage/overwhelm someone by being naked without worrying about even 10 silver of an investment. The bound short sword still does damage even if against good armor its 1-5 damage. It is still something. The new players in GY will get griefed by nakeds with 0 investment and a never ending cycle of the naked able to come back and fight immediately. If you are someone who is at negative rep they can't get regeared even with a 10s sword without going to an entirely different town that they have positive rep in or is a red town.

I think they should absolutely have the sword removed on death after leaving haven and even teach the players to gather flowers or punch a pig to death to get 10s for a sword. Hell a player can go to the graveyard and skin a walking deads corpse someone else killed for more than 10s. There is really no good reason to keep the starter sword other than convenience with the drawbacks being naked griefers are allowed a 0 investment killing tool that works quite well against new players whom have little skill with the game.

Dude you could farm guards in Fabernum or other places if you really wanted to with this starter sword. I tried no rep before release and I was able to kill guards solo but also super ez with a friend and they drop up to 2 gold or more. Takes like 1 min to kill a guard.

You can also go from nothing to something by killing people for their better stuff than the starter sword.

Would be fine as long as players could source free swords of the same low quality from the equipment vendor or something. Vets proper can make endless amounts of Flakestone spears or Bone Tissue mauls on the fly (and the mauls with nothing more than their own carcasses).

Vets abusing a mechanic is not a reason to drive away new players who are ultimately the ones penalized by changes like this.

I can only see it being a problem for noobs or no reps.

It's easy to go pick mushrooms and flowers to sell for a better vendor sword. A murderer would have to walk all the way to an outlaw town or town he's blue in in order to get a sword to go grief again...unless they have the starter sword.

it's got dura now, it actually used to be forever bound. It's a sad day when your worn shortie breaks, if you used it to grief, then GG. If you used it to defend yourself naked at a spawn spot, then you were smarter.

I think since the wep has dura, it's OK. But that's just me!

Also punching pigs. lol If my mo exp ever devolves to punching pigs (for real, not just for trolls), I might cry. If you guys are so worried, they could always make it a wep that only works in pve.

Tbh they should just get rid of the weapon/armor vendors and make the starter sword even weaker. Right now noobs are not incentivized to even try weapon crafting because the weapon they craft in the tutorial is trash compared to the starter sword and what can be acquired for a single pig kill worth of silver from the vendor.

The new player experience is pretty important, the starter sword is simply too strong for its cost. You can parry players with it, and I've killed mages and other geared players with it. I enjoy the idea of personally killing a player in better gear with the bare minimum but it removes a layer of investment for gank accounts or players who just want to PvP indefinitely. I've been both the graveyard protector and invader and let me tell you I've seen more griefers using shortswords naked than anything else. I don't suffer from this because I just doink their little skulls in but the new players who barely know how to play get camped and even when they do end up finally killing the guy all the griefer has to do is respawn at the red priest and walk right back over.

It's not about money investment to grief since 10s is literally a scratch of ones nuts but the time investment. Like I said before if you force players to get weapons only through vendors, mobs, or crafting then it limits the immediate access to grief for the griefer. When he is "vanquished" by the newbies he must then recoup and gear up in a red town or a town where he has no negative rep in. This equates to time for the new players to recoup their own losses from dying from said griefer.

It doesn't matter since launch is right around the corner but it makes logical sense to remove the shortsword after leaving haven.

agree, they should start crafting mauls with good durab for farming zombies/bandits..and then starting crafting blades if they like. i know noobs using vendor shit for days..

It's not strong at all. Parry is strong, but that's because the game is imbalanced. I still believe a parry fix is coming where you won't be able to negate most/all dmg thru a parry. It will depend more on armor and other factors (like the arc of the swing you parried.)

The worn short is a dog shit weapon. "I could beat you with a worn short sword" is a meme. You are thinking about people who grief, but what about the nubs who are tapped out once they go into the GY to farm zombies and take on 3 zombies at once and get killed? What about the PKers who will now take their short sword. It has dura, as I said, it is limited. Nobody should have to punch pigs. If you get your crafting skills right, there is emalji and flake both readily available in haven and when you compare even the 1g vendor weps (not to mention the 20s, or the worn short) it's a different universe. Not to mention they are all 1h and have really shitty range.

So now the griefer has an emalji or flake or w/e wep and he's lifting the only wep dudes have off of them. heh. Like in later MO1, you could pick your starter wep. They already lost all of their heads, now they have to go find a way to get a weapon. That's terrible. Look at the stats on the worn short haha. Hitting skin of course you are gonna do dmg, or hitting someone's kpad armor, you will do some damage. If the nubs can't band together and kill him, like if they can't all respawn naked and handle this dude, then that's a problem, too, don't you think? They get to keep their weapons, they could be 5 of them. At least it's engaging for them. You think people are gonna rage quit when they get killed in the GY, wait til they get killed AND lose their only weapon and are punching pigs or picking flowers every time they get griefed in the GY.

Like I said if you want to do anything, make it into a weapon that xs out when you turn on crims or something. The scary thing about these sort of suggestions is that these are the ones that SV takes seriously and implements. You have to think of things on a huuuuge continuum of events and see the outliers as outliers. Then you have to decide what has the best effect. Sometimes it's a pretty close call. I don't even think this is a close call.

Anyway, remove it if you guys want it removed. It won't affect me, but I think it's a bad move. The only good that wep does me is to kill my first couple of pigs (without punching hehh), and if I didn't always end up with it in my storage or some crap, I'd be able to use it to parry people to troll them when they were trying to camp me at red spots.

One thing you need to realize is how green true new players are. These are the guys who are getting griefed and God bless them for having to endure that experience, but instead of just being like... well I'm naked now but I'm gonna go back to the GY with my soul bound wep and start farming again, hope for the best, you are expecting there to be a helpful vet like... there's a pig spawn east of town, go punch some pigs, butcher them, then sell the mats and buy a new wep! Or go pick veggies or whatever (which btw, it's not always easy unless you have certain nodes and those nodes are accessible to everyone, as are PIGS) til you get the 20s to buy a new wep.

To a new player, time is important, and helping them stay on a single trajectory is important, to keep them interested in the game. That's why I enjoy giving new players 2h weps when I see them in the GY. Sure someone is gonna prol take it, but they at least get a chance to understand what a decent wep feels like and they become one step closer to combat ready by learning how to wield a wep type that 90% of the pop (cept like spear/dagger users) are using.

that's my 2c... or my 20s. At this point, I would not do ANYTHING to take away from the tools nubs have to survive. It's already super grim.

You kinda spelled it out yourself. The sword is only used for the first minute of the game then you switch to a better weapon pretty much immediately afterwards. Or you use it to "troll" players at a red spot. And then the griefers use it to spawn near blue towns at red priests to gank new players. Sounds like the benefits that the sword brings is absolutely miniscule compared to the negatives that it does.

Also there is tons of ways to make money without touching a single weapon. Especially with a town near a graveyard, you can literally butcher a walking dead corpse for more than 10 silver. The starter sword brings nothing to the game than a EXTREMELY brief period of convenience and then 250 durability worth of "trolling" and griefing players.
