I've said this many times before, you really don't see Metal armors very often, Hell you don't even see Steel armor that much anymore lmao. It's a combination of a lot of difference things which I'll sum up here.
1.) Farming In beta, takes too long for most players to want to farm sets that don't offer a huge difference. This is due to Durability in training breaks too fast for most peoples liking. If you spend a few days farming a stack of Steel but your armor sets break after a day of dueling then you are going to want to play with it less and safeguard it in your bank for "Special Occasions" This problem is even worse with Weapons which break even faster.
2.) Ping Advantage/Disadvantage. This one you gotta see to believe in how huge a difference this makes. I myself was skeptical about this for a long time. When you duel with players of similar ping to you, you can create a competitive experience. But when you encounter someone with Godly Ping they will literally go to hit you, and you can't parry any of their attacks of trade hits with them. It's almost like they have a half second advantage of them seeing into the future. This might not seem like a huge advantage until you realize you can't hit the bastard, and you can't block/parry. Recently I came across a Well known tournament player, *Cough*.. Who I dueled and that player didn't even feint their attacks or spin or anything, but like magic they landed every hit and myself and my dueling partner couldn't hit him at all. There was a noticeable delay between his attacks and my ability to put up my parry. Both I and my dueling partner had identical experiences to this when dueling him.
TLDR; Ping Advantage is a well known fear amongst the player base. The thought process goes something like this for a lot of people: I don't want to farm something that takes so long, because I could lose it to someone else with a better ping advantage in like 2 minutes lol. If you don't believe in it, you will once you encounter someone with a much better ping.
3.) Stamina Regen. So the heavier the weapons and armor you use, the faster your Stamina will run out. Lose all your stamina, and you can't defend yourself anymore, simple as that. This has lead a lot of players to avoid Plate armor altogether, and to make their weapons as light as possible. This combined with number4 is the real kick in the nuts.
4.) Damage reduction from animal materials to metal materials isn't a huge giant step forward. Ironbone armor compared to Steel was a huge debate for a long time. Now with Carapace armor you have a even more upgraded animal material and even less reason to farm metal armors, especially anything above steel that is even more time consuming. Let me explain: Most players see the +45 to all stats of Ironbone except Blunt Ofc, and think hmmm okay but Steel has 65 and so is even better. But the reality is this, in this game foot fighters average 200Hp, If I wear Ironbone armor and someone hits me for 70 damage from a powerful weapon, but then If I use Steel armor and the same weapon only hits me for 50 then you might think.. Oh wow that's a huge difference. And It is and isn't at the same time. Because if you are hit by a heavy weapon with the above example of 70 then you can survive 3 hits 70x3=210. If you are hit by 50 by the heavy weapon example that is 4 hits you survive 50x4=200. That is only 1 hit difference! If someone is using Swords or any of the other lighter weapons the math ends up being roughly the same example just with more hits involved. Example: 25 damage from sword if you wear Ironbone, 20 damage if you use steel. That would be 8 hits wearing Steel tanking 25 a hit, or 10 hits from Ironbone tanking 20 a hit. This is a rough example, but data in game with testing in duels shows roughly the same outcome.
So basically if you combine points 3 and 4 the jump of farming for Steel or any of the high end metals instead of animal materials which take way less time just doesn't add up. And players know this, and would rather keep their stamina from lighter armor which is a joke in my opinion, i'd rather the game see better materials used instead of cheap junk.
The reason behind the Hp on armor is it would allow you Star vault devs the ability to add on extra defenses to armor sets for balancing instead of just stacking on more defenses. In addition it would make someone in heavy armor a tank against magic damage as well, which would also open up the door for % magic spells against heavy armor down the road for balancing.
