1) with 3 to 5 players you will be able to do most PvE content except some of the biggest bosses. You should be able to provide yourself with the necessary gear, if you all make 2 characters and take complimenting professions. You may even build yourselves a hamlet over time if thats your goal.
However, in pvp thats a pretty small group. You can roam and gank and do little skirmishes, but you will often bump into much larger groups, especially in dungeons. You will have to learn which parts of the map are quite empty and which are populated and where and when to pick fights, in order to avoid the zergs.
