As of right now, the way you cast/select spells is rather awkward since you have 2 kind of spells:
- the ones you prepare/memorize to shoot
- the ones which shoot instantly
And you don't even know which spell is shot instantly and which gets prepared.
To cast spells you have 2 options:
- you press the hotbar-key of the spell and prepare it, or instantly shoot it
- you press a target-selection-key to prepare the last spell or instantly shoot it
First of all, it is rather unintiutive to memorize a spell despite you pressing the target-selection-key for an enemy, but the bigger problem is that spells which instantly shoot need to be aborted so you can recast them with your target-selection-key.
Furthermore you never know which one was the last spell you have casted either.
The way spells work need to be unified so they are less annoying to use.
My suggestions to these problems are:
1. Spells which you prepare get a little checkmark in their hotbar-slot. If you check it, you instantly cast it if you press the hotbar-key, if you uncheck it, you just select it.
- you know which spell you can prepare
- you have no change on how these spells work from the current system, if you check them
2. Make it so, that instant cast spells and unchecked prepare spells don't fire if you press the hotbar key, but that you just select them.
- you now can switch quickly between spells and just press your target-selection-key to cast them
3. Selected/last casted spells are marked on the hotbar.
- you know which spell you casted last and which spell will be cast when you press your target-selection-key
