A PVP arena mode in Haven might do wonders

I love the group fights in Mortal. Really a beautiful blend of magic and melee combat. The melee combat takes practice to be good at despite being the simple 4 direction system it is. The spell casting, schools, and overall combat mechanics of a mage are well done. I feel like a real magician out there.

Haven doesn't show the true fun of this game, the group fights. It shows you skills and leveling, but the whole point of doing all the farming and leveling is so you can be an effective fighter. New players just don't get to experience that outside of a duel. A YouTube video may have brought them to the game, showing them an amazingly intense, full risk fight, but they never get to experience even a semi-fair fight in Haven, and we all know there aren't going to be fair fights for them when they leave Haven.

If all the players in Haven, any instance, could enter matchmaking for 5v5s or 10v10s in an arena, it would be great for player retention. They would see why Mortal Online has been around for over a decade and why the hardcore player base supports this game still. They would see why we can die and lose everything on us, laugh it off, and still head back to the closest priest and make an attempt to get our stuff back, or even start from scratch.

The only thing would be to iron out the details. Do you bring your build as it stands in Haven, inventory and all, into a 5v5 or a 10v10? A random class cant be assigned to you... if you're going for a foot fighter and you end up as a mage with no hot bar in match making... that's not gonna work well.

There's also the mounts and pets. Do we let the mounted wheelchair gank builds in on this, and enter matchmaking with their pets? If the arena is as big as a soccer field we can let the mounted pig lancers test their skills out. But these are all things to consider with an arena mode. Anything can be done if implemented properly. Personally, I'd keep the pets out of the Arena for now. Would have to test it, like anything.

I'm freely writing this as I ponder how it would all work, but moving into the arena from Haven with your characters current inventory and skills doesn't sound too bad of an idea, trinkets and all. Like after a player leaves Haven, it will emphasize you getting good enough items to fight with. Then it would be up to matchmaking to figure out how the players are put into teams. Or screw it, random teams? If a team somehow ends up with 5 mages vs 5 foot fighters... good luck.

I really believe the Haven Arena would be incredibly popular. People will enjoy fighting alongside each other and friendships will be forged very early on in their MO2 careers. They will see first hand how fun the combat is and it'll make them excited to go for better gear in the "real world" of Myrland, and also have a little combat experience under their belt. Or it exposes the weaknesses of their current build and helps them adjust the character early on or reroll to something more their style. This is only positive for the game and retaining players.

I don't think the current Haven re-work is enough. The new Haven is definitely better, but we can do even better in training and retaining new players. Im confident this Haven-only PVP arena would do the trick if implemented correctly.
