The Auto-lock skills button just plain sucks. Using it in many situations is a liability that potentially gimps your build until you unlock skills and re-level them.

  1. Sometimes when you auto-lock, it straight up bugs out and will de-level skills below 100 and lock them, requiring the player to manually look through their skills and unlock + re-level them
  2. Using it with trinkets equipped generally means your build will be broken as soon as you run out of charges / unequip the trinkets, requiring the player to manually look through their skills and unlock + re-level them
  3. Changing weight class with skills locked results in some skills remaining locked at 99 if you fall below an attribute bonus threshold (most notably armor training skills which instantly nerfs your armor carry weight by disabling heavy armor training entirely since it requires 100 armor training), requiring the player to manually look through their skills and unlock + re-level them
The above issues all combine to cause unnecessary new player confusion, I've lost count of how many new players I've seen raging and potentially quitting at the skills system in this game because they don't understand why their armor training is stuck at lvl99 (because combat manoeuvring got locked at 99 by the buggy auto-lock button or losing trinket bonuses or changing weight class).

I would like to propose a solution, a much simpler and user-friendly system:
  • Add a text input to each skill for "Target level" (defaults to 100) which allows players to specify their target level for that skill, if they are below that level the skill behaves as if it were on "+" in the current system until reaching the target level, if they are above that level it behaves as if it were on "-" in the current system until reaching the target level. When target level is reached, the skill behaves as if it is "locked" in the current system.
  • Remove skill auto-lock and -/+ functionalities, keeping only a button to toggle manual level lock to e.g. prevent auto-delevelling skills on which you have temporary bonuses from trinkets
  • This alleviates all 3 of the issues mentioned above, 1) won't occur because buggy auto-lock button is gone, 2) and 3) won't be as frustrating because as soon as the trinkets run out of charge or are unequipped / you change weight classes your deficient skills will immediately start levelling up again automatically, in the case of 3) they would instantly re-level to 100 since you would be at max XP lvl99
