Can you make explosives in this game, or is there spells with aoe explosive damage.

yes, earthquake is an aoe spell. Its the only aoe of the ecumenical school. It hits you and anyone around you in a sphere. Its a high level spell.it has a pretty long cast time too, and requires some rare materials. InMO1 you could dismount riders with it.
in Mo1, the magic school of elementalism had many aoe spells. That magic school is planned for MO2, but not in game yet.

If I have What Henrik Said correctly in mind, there will never be anything like gunpowder.
There are spells that seem to have the force of explosions, but a player who has a mage character will expand on that and explain it.
There will be siege weapons as in MO1, I presume (not explosive; just kinetic).
